1. Overview of Data Protection

General Information

The following information provides a simple overview of what happens to your personal data when you use our app. Personal data is any data with which you can be personally identified. Private Cookbook is built with privacy as a core principle. We generally do not collect, store, or process your personal data on our servers. The only exceptions are temporary processing required for the Premium AI features and subscription verification, as described below.

2. Data Collection in Our App

Zero-Knowledge Architecture

Private Cookbook operates on a "Zero-Knowledge" basis. This means:

• Local Storage: All your recipes, ingredients, and images are stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData technology.
• iCloud Sync: If enabled, your data is synchronized across your devices using your private Apple iCloud account (CloudKit).
• Sharing: If you use the sharing feature, recipe data is securely shared via iCloud directly with the recipients you choose. We do not have access to these shared recipes.
• No Developer Access: The developer has technically no access to your saved recipes, photos, or usage data. We cannot see what you cook or read your notes.
• No Third-Party Analytics: We do not use any third-party tracking or analytics services (like Google Analytics, Firebase, or Facebook Pixel). We do not track your behavior.
• Subscription Verification: To enable Premium features, we verify your subscription status by sending your purchase Transaction ID to Apple's verifyReceipt API via our secure server. We do not store this ID.

System Permissions

The app requests access to specific system features only when necessary:

• Camera & Photo Library: Used strictly to allow you to add photos to your recipes. These photos never leave your device/iCloud.

OpenAI Integration (Optional)

Private Cookbook offers optional AI features (Recipe Scanning) powered by OpenAI.

• Processing: If you use the scanning feature with a Premium subscription, the text extracted from your recipe is temporarily processed on our secure server to forward the request to OpenAI. We do not store this content; it is discarded immediately after processing.
• Data Privacy: Data sent to OpenAI is subject to OpenAI's Privacy Policy. OpenAI does not use data submitted via their API to train their models by default.
• Bring Your Own Key (BYOK): If you use your own API Key, the interaction is directly between your device and OpenAI. We do not see or store your key or the data you transmit.

Your Rights

Since we do not store any of your data, we cannot delete or provide a copy of it—only you possess it. You have full control over your data on your device and within your iCloud account. Deleting the app removes the local data. Deleting data from iCloud removes it from your cloud storage.
